My inspiration for the Pantone series came mainly from Mark Rothko paintings, Gee’s Bend quilts, and - Italians singing from their balconies. I was moved by the tragedy of the pandemic, but also by the hope, resilience, and strength of the human spirit amid chaos.

I had a practical need for a clear vision; a self imposed assignment helped me to focus.
I also had an emotional yearning to respond to the resilience I’d witnessed, with images both uplifting and full of strength.

All paintings begin with the same landscape composition of a high horizon line. I let the rest evolve intuitively…often adding “patches”. Each work has a particular and decisive color bent. Woohoo, it all came together!

For years I’ve wanted to incorporate formal influences of Gee’s Bend quilts and Rothko color fields…but never really made it happen. With all that’s going on, I was having dramatic thoughts of “if not now, when?”
With limitations, came a clearer understanding of my direction.
I’m excited to make more!
