Karl Yost uses his ceramic forms to explore subtleties in the landscape of the western United States. His work is concerned with the shapes and textures of the geography and with the jewelry like intimacy of the small found objects that so many of us are drawn to while exploring woodlands, deserts, mountains and sea shores. An intriguing bit of bone, the soft green colored rock, or the oddly twisted piece wood, though small in size have there own sense of monumentality and presence. Through this obscurity Yost expresses iconic patterns found in nature like similarity in erosion patterns of a broken sand dollar and that of a large canyon. The sculptural diversity of these inspirations serve as a direct influence on his work. Retaining vague references to traditional pottery forms Yost’s work relies more on sculptural ideas.
